Without My Jacket

I went out into the world today

without my jacket.
I went out into the blinding sun
and I felt the warm spring air.

The winter has been long and dark
and cold and gray.
My jacket kept me warm
inside, and kept the coldness out.

My jacket was an armor made of
thick wool, and good intentions –
but I never felt it burden me.
I have worn it a long, long time.

Today I stepped out with my jacket on,
into the blinding sun, and the warm spring air.
I went out into the world today

and I didn’t need my jacket.
